How to Track Your Federal Tax Refund Status Online

Once your tax return is signed, sealed, and delivered, the question on almost everyone’s mind is the same: When will the funds hit my account?

While the IRS has largely moved away from paper checks to improve security and efficiency, the waiting period can still feel uncertain. Whether you opted for a direct deposit into a single account, split the refund across multiple accounts, or are receiving a prepaid debit card, you do not have to guess where your money is.

Using the Official Tracking Tool

The most reliable way to monitor your return is through the Where’s My Refund? tool on the IRS website. This interactive system provides online access to your refund status 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Timing depends heavily on how you filed. If you e-filed, you can generally check your status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt of your return. Statistics show that nine out of 10 taxpayers who e-file with direct deposit receive their refunds within 21 days. However, if you filed a paper return, you will need to be patient; information usually isn't available until four weeks after mailing.

What You Need to Check Your Status

Before you log in to check your status, make sure you have a copy of your federal tax return handy. The system requires exact data to verify your identity. You will need to enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN),

  • The tax year in question (options currently include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., single, married filing jointly, head of household, etc.), and

  • The exact whole-dollar refund amount shown on your return.

Understanding the IRS Status Updates

Once your details are verified, the tool will display one of three stages for your return:

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is currently processing it.

  • Refund Approved: Processing is complete, and the IRS is preparing to issue your payment by a specific date.

  • Refund Sent: The funds are on their way to your bank or a check is in the mail. Note that it may take up to 5 days for your bank to credit the funds to your account, or several weeks for a physical check to arrive.

Mobile Options and Troubleshooting

For those who prefer tracking via smartphone, the IRS offers IRS2Go. This free app is available for both Apple and Android devices and offers the same tracking capabilities as the website. You can find download links at IRS2Go.

Both the online tool and the app are designed to be accessible. Where’s My Refund? is compatible with the Job Access with Speech screen reader (and Braille displays) to assist visually impaired taxpayers.

When Should You Call?

It is tempting to call the IRS for updates, but the Where’s My Refund? tool generally has the most up-to-date information available to their phone agents. The system updates once every 24 hours, typically overnight, so there is no need to check more than once a day.

If you do not see your refund within 28 days of the mailing date listed on the tool, the system will guide you through starting a refund trace. However, unless the tool specifically directs you to call, it is usually best to wait.
