Important Tax Deadlines for Individuals: February 2026

As February 2026 approaches, it's crucial to stay on top of individual tax obligations. This guide delves into estimated tax payment options, regulations for reporting tips, and key dates for W-4 exemptions.

Key Deadline: February 2 - Estimated Tax Payments

If you missed the last estimated tax installment payment due on January 15, you have the option to file your income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) for 2025 by February 2. By doing so and paying any owed taxes at this time, you'll avoid penalties on that final installment. Should you need additional time, remember taxes and filing must be completed by April 15.

Attention: February 10 - Tip Reporting for Employees

Employees who have accumulated $20 or more in tips in January must report them to their employer by this date. Whether using IRS Form 4070 or your own signed statement, ensure it includes your full name, address, Social Security number, employer's name, and address, alongside the total tips received. Employers will deduct FICA taxes and income tax from regular wages for these tips. Insufficient wages will lead to the uncollected withholding being noted in box 8 of your W-2, payable with your annual return.

Reminder: February 17 - Withholding Exemption

If you had a withholding exemption on last year's Form W-4 and wish to continue, submit a new Form W-4 to your employer by February 17.
