March 2026 Tax Calendar: Deadlines and Action Items

With April 15 looming just around the corner, March serves as the final staging ground for a successful tax season. It represents the bridge between gathering your documents and finalizing your return. To keep you on track, we have outlined the critical dates and action items for March 2026.

March 10: Tip Reporting Deadline

For those in the service industry, tip reporting is a monthly maintenance task that prevents end-of-year tax surprises. If you received more than $20 in tips during February, you must report them to your employer by March 10 using IRS Form 4070.

You can use the official form or a signed statement containing your name, address, SSN, employer details, the relevant period, and the total tips received. This reporting triggers your employer to withhold the necessary income and FICA taxes from your regular paycheck. If these aren't withheld now, the uncollected amount will appear in Box 8 of your W-2, leaving you responsible for paying the balance—and potentially a large lump sum—when you file your annual return.

March 16: The "Don't Wait" Milestone

We are officially one month away from the individual income tax deadline. If you haven't scheduled your tax preparation appointment yet, we strongly recommend calling us this week. Our calendar fills up rapidly as the deadline approaches.

A common misconception: You do not need every single receipt or document in hand to book your slot. If you are waiting on a stray 1099 or a specific receipt, come in anyway. We can prepare a preliminary return, create a checklist of missing items, and plug in the final numbers once they arrive. This approach is far less stressful than rushing at the eleventh hour.

Considering an Extension?

Even if you anticipate needing an extension, we should still communicate now. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. The best strategy is to prepare a draft return, estimate your liability, and pay any tax due by April 15 to minimize interest and penalties. We can then file the extension paperwork on your behalf.

Standard Filing Rules

Weekends & Holidays: Remember, if a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the deadline shifts to the next business day.

Disaster Area Relief: Taxpayers in designated disaster areas are often granted automatic extensions. To check if your location qualifies for relief, please consult the official resources below:

Contact our office today to secure your appointment or to discuss your filing strategy for the upcoming deadline.
